<<<  The Four Tetrarchs

Eric and his friend Noelle are standing outside St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. It was a great moment to come across this sculpture. It is called The Four Tetrarchs. It represents four rulers of the Roman Empire at the beginning of the fourth century. They have one hand on each other's shoulders and another on their swords. Have they decided to be friends-or is it that they don't really trust each other? Eric has read about this work of art for years and was excited to actually see it.

Monastary Gate  >>>

Eric visits the monastery of Mt. Oliveto in Tuscany. He is standing by an ancient drawbridge at the gate. The monastery is a thousand years old. Kings and emperors have ridden across that drawbridge. He is looking at a terra cotta sculpture by the Renaissance artist Andrea della Robbia (1434-1525)
